Produce of India: In India, limited cultivation of ambe halad (mango ginger) takes place in West Bengal, Assam, the Western Ghats, the Konkan coast, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Kerala.
History: It was named Mango Ginger due to its mango-like smell of the rhizome. Ayurveda and Unani medicinal systems have given much importance to mango ginger as an appetizer, alexteric, antipyretic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, emollient, expectorant and laxative and to cure biliousness, itching, skin diseases, bronchitis, asthma, hiccough and inflammation due to injuries.
There is a shlok in Sanskrit which means “Raw mango flavored ginger has a cooling effect on the body. It aggravates Vata. It also pacifies deranged Pitta, cures all types of itching and skin diseases. ”
Active Ingredient: Mango ginger contains, mainly, cis-and trans-hydro ocimene, ocimene and myrcene. It has antifungal property.
