Produce of India: Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Gujrat, Andhra pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab are major Bahera growing states in India. The plant is usually found flourishing in scattered forests, upper layer trees of stream valleys, sunny mountain slopes, and mixed deciduous forests, and thrives best on fertile, loamy soils with good drainage.
History: In Sanskrit Behada is known as karshaphala, kalidruma and vibhitaki. Its fruits are mainly used for preparing various drugs.It is used in ayurveda. It is a deciduous tree with an average height of 30m. The bark is brownish grey in color. The leaves are elliptical in shape and are 10-12cm long. The fruits are ovoid in shape and the kernels are sweet in taste.
Active Ingredient: The active ingredient in behda is gallic acid which is a liver protective ingredient. Other compounds which are found in behada are tannin,pseudo tannins, chebulic, chebulagic, chebulinic acids, non-chebulic acid, ellagitannins, corilagin, ellagic acid, triterpenes and triterpenoidal glycosides.
