Produce of India: The highest producer of masoor dal in India is Madhya Pradesh, followed by Uttar Pradesh, west Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand ,Rajasthan , and Assam. A few other states also produce but very little.
History: As a lentil, the masoor has been associated with Egypt, possibly because the grain originated in the Mediterranean and was used by the ancient Egyptians. Not just in India but in many other part of the world, the lentil is dubbed as the “Miser” lentil. It is a staple food in every Indian household. It is widely cultivated in warm, tropical and temperate zones for its edible and nutritious seeds.
Active Ingredient: Red lentil or green lentil are the most common. Lentil color is due to the presence of lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids. The composition of lentils is approximately 28% protein, 63% total carbohydrate, ( 47% of which is starch and 12 % dietary fiber) and only about 1% fat.
